Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging Mission Statement

The ACC of Greater Philadelphia is committed to promoting and advancing the goals of diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging for the benefit of its members, sponsors, the legal profession and the greater community in which it serves.  ACC of Greater Philadelphia celebrates the rich diversity of its membership and aspires to provide diversity in programming, activities, sponsorships and outreach of the Chapter to balance the equities, broaden opportunities, provide greater access and ensure a fair and level playing field for the in-house constituencies we represent and serve.

Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging Aspiration and Vision Statement

The ACC Greater Philadelphia Chapter aspires to be a thought leader in promoting and advancing a diverse and inclusive culture of connection and belonging for the in-house counsel community and the companies our members serve.  The Chapter aims to provide its members with educational opportunities so that members can be thought leaders in the diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging arena in their organizations.  The Chapter recognizes that our differences are our strength and that our similarities unite us.  The Chapter aspires to be a catalyst to drive our profession and the clients we serve to embrace differences, open minds, expand opportunities and create an inclusive culture that enhances the profession, provides opportunities, closes gaps and opens doors.

Racism is real. Silence is acceptance.

The escalation of violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States has resulted in 3,800 reported cases of anti-Asian hate crimes since March 2020. Tragically, that hate devolved into the recent killings in Atlanta of Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Soon C. Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, and Yong A. Yue. We mourn their loss and share in the grief of their family and friends.

This is an outrage on many levels. Innocent lives were once again lost because of hate — with victims targeted simply because of their race. The response to recent events remains woefully insufficient. Where is the outcry? We should all question whether enough is being done to address the issues at the root of what is fueling this surge in violence. Silence is acceptance.

As lawyers, we swear an oath to defend the rule of law, and we condemn in the strongest terms possible this grave threat to democracy, equality, and social justice. When acts of violence or hate are aimed at any group, we are all impacted, as hate and violence threaten the fabric of humanity.

Stand against race jokes. Stand against hate. Stand against violence. We challenge our members, supporters, and you to stand up, speak out, and actively lend your support of our AAPI colleagues, neighbors, families, and friends traumatized by the ongoing escalation of these senseless acts of violence.  

The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) stands in solidarity with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and the AAPI communities to decry and denounce these series of attacks in the United States and around the world.

SHRM — ACC Alliance for Change

SHRM and ACC are partnering together to bring Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) and Chief Legal Officers (CLOs) together as allies for change. Listen to a recording of the first webinar, "A New Understanding of Workplace Diversity and Inclusion,” which is a conversation about how CHROs and CLOs can work together.

On Thursday, June 25, SHRM and ACC will offer a second webinar to share and discuss new research from CHROs and CLOs on the state of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Courageous Conversations

This important conversation will feature black attorneys sharing their personal experiences with biases and racial discrimination, as well as the challenges they have encountered in their careers due to the color of their skin. A leading diversity consultant will facilitate the conversation, offering resources and recommendations for how to better support black colleagues in the office, as well as in our communities. Disrupting the Silence

Conversations designed to discuss and disrupt systemic, institutional racial inequality are difficult to have. However, such discussions are necessary in order to stem the disparate treatment that African Americans continue to face. Often, people of color and those who want to support them feel intimidated to speak up — afraid that their words may be misinterpreted, trigger misperceptions, or worse. As a result, many sit silent. Silence will not bring about understanding or change. Thus, we must disrupt the silence and bridge our ability to communicate openly, honestly, and with mutual respect.

Stand for Change

We will feature effective approaches others can implement when responding to social injustice, and we will spotlight both individual and organizational efforts. Speakers will discuss how being a part of the leadership team positively impacts their ability to foster change in their organizations and communities and how they are using their positions and influence to make a difference. Street Law - Legal Diversity Pipeline Programs

Street Law’s Legal Diversity Pipeline Programs partner law firms and corporate legal departments with nearby, diverse high school classes. Through classroom visits and a field trip to the law firm or legal department, volunteers teach lessons and lead activities designed to increase students' knowledge and interest in the law and legal careers.
