STREET LAW 2021 – THIS TIME IT’S VIRTUAL!
ACC Chicago Street Law, our corporate legal diversity pipeline program, is an exciting initiative designed to help prime the pipeline to the legal profession for young people from underserved high schools in Chicago and the Northwest suburbs. This year we were able to provide programs to many of our classes in a virtual setting.
This program – developed by ACC in collaboration with the Street Law organization (www.streetlaw.org) - creates partnerships between lawyers and nearby high school law classes serving youth from diverse backgrounds. The idea behind the program is to encourage high school students to continue their educations and to consider careers in the law.
The ACC Chicago Chapter Street Law Program has both Chicago Public Schools and Northwest Suburbs U-46 District components. We identify which classes will be able to benefit from partnering with in-house counsel through the winter/spring semester then during the pandemic our volunteers connected with the teachers/schools to reach the students in the best manner possible.
We taught entirely new courses that were developed with virtual learning in mind. It was an exciting initiative. Who knows what next year will bring as we take our new experience, knowledge and lesson plans forward!
Volunteers find it to be a fun and gratifying way to give back to the community and, at the same time, form meaningful relationships with their in-house colleagues. The time commitment involved is fairly flexible, probably averaging 10-15 hours over the course of three to four months – a small commitment to perhaps change the life of a deserving student.

April 27, 2016 -- I am very proud and excited to report that tonight, in Washington D.C., the ACC Chicago Chapter will be honored as the recipient of Street Law, Inc.’s 2016 Excellence in Service Award. The Excellence in Service Award recognizes the volunteer efforts of companies, law firms and organizations that provide exceptional community service in the form of a Street Law program. ACC Chicago Chapter leaders and Co-Chairs of the Chapter’s Street Law program, Jenifer Robbins and Julia Jackson, will accept the award at Street Law’s Annual Awards Gala.
As many of you know, the ACC Chicago Chapter participates in Street Law’s Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program, where its members work to encourage diverse young people to pursue legal careers and increase their knowledge of the law by providing them with role models, career education and hands-on experiences in the legal field.
The ACC Chicago Chapter established its Pipeline Program in 2006, with conference program sites for many years in downtown Chicago at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and the northwest Chicago suburbs at Sears Holdings Management Corporation. The program is exceptional in many ways; perhaps most notable is its size in terms of the number of participating high schools and students reached. Collectively, the program is active at eight Chicagoland high schools, has more than 80 volunteers, and reaches approximately 325 students each program cycle.
Thanks to all of you, ACC Chicago’s dedication to the Street Law Program grows stronger every year. The program benefits both the attorney volunteers and the student participants by strengthening the communities where they live and work. Enjoy the moment and send us your tweets to @Chicago_ACC.
